A tampon comprising compressed fibrous material and a flexible recovery element, the tampon is dimensionally stable, is arranged and configured for digital insertion, and has an insertion end, a recovery end, a longitudinal axis, and a substantially cylindrical outer surface, wherein said outer surface of the tampon is at least partially provided with spirally shaped, longitudinal grooves, wherein the tampon has sufficient column strength to permit digital insertion thereof into a body cavity.
